UFC on Versus 5: Miller ready to prove he?s among the best lightweights

MILWAUKEE -- You can count on Jim Miller to always bring some good facial hair. At today's open workouts for UFC on Versus 5, a red mustache and pointy goatee sprouted from his face. He explained that it's all for the children.

"I'm having a little boy in September, and his name is going to be Wyatt, so I wanted to greet him with the nice Wyatt Earp curled mustache. With my daughter, I grew a nice thick protest beard, once she was born, I shaved it into a celebration mustache," Earp Miller said. (He assured Cagewriter that the protest was just because he was jealous that his wife got to hold the baby throughout the pregnancy, and the celebration was for when his daughter was born.)

You can also count on Miller to win. He has strung together seven straight victories, but still finds himself just short of a title shot in the stacked lightweight division. That doesn't seem to bother him as he prepares for his bout with Ben Henderson.

"It's pretty easy, because I'm here to fight the best, and I know I can beat anybody in the world. The way the title picture has worked out, you can't expect anything. You gotta wait it out and let these guys settle it. And I've been training my butt off so I can beat them."

Miller has been patient about waiting for the title shot, not complaining publicly about how he is often forgotten among the best lightweights. He happily takes the fights assigned to him, but lately has become more confident in speaking out on his own behalf.

He claims it's not an attitude change, but an increase in comfort around media.

"I've pretty much had the same attitude. I knew I could hang with these guys. I feel great, I feel sharp, I'm learning new things every day. It's more just getting comfortable with the mike in my face. It comes out a lot easier than it did three years ago.:

Stefan Struve prepares for height difference with Pat Barry

On Tuesday, we showed you how Pat Barry is prepping flying clotheslines for his bout with Stefan Struve. The foot difference between the two fighters' heights means that they both face a challenge in training. Now, Struve has released a video to show how he is getting ready.

What's interesting about this fight is that the fighters have strengths that don't fit with their body types. Barry, the shorter one, has devastating headkicks, and Struve, the fighter with long, gangly limbs, has several submission wins under his belt.

Hardy misses, then makes weight at UFC on Versus 5 weigh-ins

MILWAUKEE -- Dan Hardy, one of the main eventers for Sunday night's UFC on Versus 5 card, missed weight by a half-pound on his first try during weigh-ins outside the Harley Davidson Museum. He made weight an hour later.

The rest of the fighters made weight:

MAIN CARD (Versus)
? Dan Hardy (171.5)* vs. Chris Lytle (170.5)
? Ben Henderson (156) vs. Jim Miller (155.5)
? Donald Cerrone (156) vs. Charles Oliveira (155)
? Duane Ludwig (170.5) vs. Amir Sadollah (170)

PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook)
? C.B. Dollaway (186) vs. Jared Hamman (185)
? Joseph Benavidez (135.5) vs. Eddie Wineland (136)
? Ed Herman (186) vs. Kyle Noke (185)
? Ronny Markes (205) vs. Karlos Vemola (205.5)
? Alex Caceres (146) vs. Jim Hettes (145.5)
? Cole Miller (155) vs. T.J. O'Brien (155.5)
? Danny Castillo (156) vs. Jacob Volkmann (156)
? Edwin Figueroa (136) vs. Jason Reinhardt (135)
* - Missed weight on first attempt

Other notes from the weigh-in:

-- T.J. O'Brien and Cole Miller got in each other's face and jawed, continuing even as Miller walked off the stage. UFC president Dana White told the two to save it for tomorrow night.

-- Charles Oliveira and Donald Cerrone also appeared to engage in smack talk while facing off, which is interesting considering that Oliveira speaks Portugese and Cerrone speaks English.

-- Jacob Volkmann started his campaign today, wearing a "Volkmann for President" shirt. I wonder what the Secret Service will have to say about that.

-- Several fighters tried to earn the award for best weigh-in wear. Eddie Wineland wore underwear that resembled denim shorts for a Tobias Bluth Funke look, while Amir Sadollah wore brightly colored shorts that caused UFC commentator to quip, "I hope no one is on acid out there." [Ed. note -- an earlier version messed up the joke on one of my favorite shows of all time. All apologies.]

Jon Fitch officially cleared to return, still may fight at UFC 139 in November

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FitchJon_150_37.jpg
UFC welterweight Jon Fitch has been cleared to return to action, and according to a report from MMAJunkie.com, he may get his wish of competing on the UFC 139 card in San Jose, Calif.

"I'm back!" Fitch wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. "Dr. Kavitne gave me the OK to fight."

Fitch had undergone shoulder surgery after pulling out of a proposed UFC 132 rematch with B.J. Penn, and has been recovering since then. He hoped to return on the UFC 139 card, and now MMAJunkie reports that he may meet Johny Hendricks on the event, expected for the HP Pavilion in San Jose on November 19.

Fitch is 13-1-1 in 15 fights in the UFC, with his sole loss coming to Georges St. Pierre in their title fight back in 2008 and his draw coming against B.J. Penn this February.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Hendricks doesn't fit the "champions or former champions" for the opponents Fitch wanted to face off against, but he may not be given much of a choice if the UFC isn't going to offer him a fight like that. After being out for awhile and returning from a serious injury, he needs to simply get back into the cage, and Hendricks will represent a good, solid test for him and how well the shoulder has healed. The 11-1 Hendricks has quietly racked up a 6-1 record in the UFC, with the only loss coming to Rick Story last December. The two-time NCAA D-1 wrestling champion also has the credentials to hang with Fitch in what is his dominant attribute, making this a tougher fight than many may see it as.

?Bang? Ludwig gives Sadollah a stand-up lesson at UFC on Versus 5

Duane Ludwig is still a relatively young fighter, but the guy has logged 88 pro fights between mixed martial arts and kickboxing, so when Amir Sadollah decided to stand with a guy nicknamed "Bang," he was asking for it.

What Sadollah got was a beating for two rounds and probably a major headache. Ludwig stormed to a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 on all three scorecards, at UFC on Versus 5 in Milwaukee, Wis.

"I've been doing this since I was 15. Not to be boastful, but I'm good at what I do," Ludwig, 33, said. "I just have good composure. I drill these things over and over."

Sadollah (6-3, 6-3 UFC) has an excellent Muay Thai background, but not on the pro level. He's also not a great boxer and Ludwig took advantage of a guy in just his ninth professional fight. From the opening seconds, Ludwig landed wicked combinations inside. The left hook was especially devastating as Sadollah looked a step slow in the pocket.

The champ from Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter," showed a granite chin because he got rocked and appeared to be on shaky legs with 1:25 left in the first. It happened again in the second when Bang ripped him with a left hook with 2:40 left in the round.

Sadollah, who's a pretty solid ground fighter from the top, tried to get it to the mat often, but failed on eight occasions.

"I'm not playing. I'm a mixed martial artist," proclaimed Ludwig about his takedown defense.

Ludwig (21-11, 4-2 UFC) tired a bit in the third, but his stamina was still better than many of his previous fights where he's cost himself victories due to exhaustion. Frankly, Ludwig was probably a little shocked that some of those shots over the first two rounds didn't finish Sadollah.

"Amir ... he's good man. I wasn't nervous for this fight and that got me scared. Amir is a tough guy," Ludwig said.

QUOTABLES: Charles Oliveira says he and Donald Cerrone will "give the fans a fight like they have never seen before" at UFC on Versus 5

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_Versus_5_poster_1.jpg
"This type of fight with 'Cowboy' is my favorite kind. I believe the first round will be like 'Rocky 2,' the second round will be like Kung Fu Theater and the third will be like the movie 'The Matrix.' I think 'Cowboy' and I are going to give the fans a fight like they have never seen before.

When I heard I was fighting 'Cowboy,' I was very happy. I knew this would be a very good and exciting fight for the fans. I think the winner and the loser are both going to the hospital afterward. I just hope they put us in the same room, so we can talk about the great fight we just had!"

-Charles Oliveira talks to MMAJunkie.com about his fight with Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone this Sunday at UFC on Versus 5 in Milwaukee.

Penick's Analysis: This is an absolutely fantastic lightweight matchup for a free event. Both Oliveira and Cerrone are capable of putting on really exciting fights, and each some very exciting wins, so this fight has a lot of expectations from an entertainment standpoint; though that could lead to disappointment, I think both will be going in there to put on a show and to make an impression. After his win over Nik Lentz was overturned to a no contest, Oliveira is going to be out to get that win back on his record, and Cerrone will be out to keep his current winning streak intact. I love Oliveira's attitude heading into the fight and it's one I can't wait to see on Sunday on Versus.

Alistair Overeem willing to sign exclusive contract with UFC; Golden Glory head comments on recent releases from Zuffa

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Golden_Glory_logo.jpeg
While last week's mass-release of fighters in the Golden Glory camp may suggest some bad blood boiling between the Dutch contingent and Zuffa, Golden Glory head Bas Boon says that's not the case.

UFC President Dana White came out last week told reporters that the issue in doing business with Golden Glory was their insistence on having payments go to them instead of directly to fighters, a method of business Zuffa had no intention of playing along with. This difference in business practices, according to White, led to the release of Marloes Coenen, Jon Olav Einemo and Valentijn Overeem.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem had been released the week before, though that release has still not been made exactly clear. It has been reported that there was some leveraging on Golden Glory's part being attempted, including willingness to fight on the Sept. 10 Strikeforce event if certain concessions were made, despite his public talk of injury. Ultimately, the public blame has gone to the issue of paying fighters directly or through management, but Boon has now released a statement saying that issue had been resolved.

"The Golden Glory management discussed before coming to the US about the payment situation and it was agreed to speak with a Zuffa lawyer about this in Vancouver, to find a solution," Boon wrote. "There was a contract in place and Golden Glory and Einemo honored the UFC rules including getting the check on the fighters name...

"The Zuffa lawyer explained that the fighters could open an account at a bank were the UFC did their banking and the check would clear in only two days instead of 6 weeks till 8 weeks (that's how long it takes to clear a check in a foreign country which was also an issue for some of the fighters) and they could then transfer the amount to the final destination at their choice. They were thankful and did this."

Boon said that after Einemo's fight in Vancouver, the payment issue had been resolved, and they went along with it for the fights in June as well as for Coenen's fight, and believes White hadn't been fully informed of that resolution.

"We just wanted the things as they were before, but it was far from what it was before," he continued. "The payment was done how the UFC wanted and again we agreed and did the same as in Vancouver, so that matter was solved, so I do not understand why Dana claims we did not agree?"

"We did not have a choice and never said we would not fight in the future or that we would refuse to work like this in the future (we worked out that problem with the Zuffa lawyer in the Vancouver and even agreed with their new sponsor policies). Maybe there is a miscommunication and [Dana] was not well informed that the direct payment issue was solved and no longer an issue as I myself have been in and out hospital for two weeks because of heath issues ( the reason why this press release is so late)."

Boon turns the blame to Scott Coker and the business deals they had worked out previously that now have caused problems with the new ownership.

"The problems with Strikeforce was that we made some agreements with Scott which were creating headaches now Zuffa took over," Boon said. "Behind the scene I was preparing a great deal for corporation between Strikeforce, Dream, K-1 and Glory to do something great together with Scott (this included a tv channel and footage deal). I introduced Scott thru a partner of mine in LA to some powerful people in the US (Scott was very surprised after this meeting and exited and mailed me after his meeting with these people how impressed he was). I never could have guessed that at the same moment I was talking to Scott to make a massive move for becoming a real competitor to the UFC, Scott was already talking with the same UFC for selling Strikeforce.

"Scott told me that he had partners and that there were financial difficulties with Strikeforce and any new TV or other deal they would welcome," Boon continued. "As I am a producer as well (produced more then 1000 hour of fighting content) and also made tons of other deals for promoters (like the K-1 live broadcasting on the dutch TV Channel SBS6) I trusted Scott with some business plans as I knew Scott from the time he was a promoter for K-1 and we all wanted to move forward in the fight business.

"Scott convinced me to start working with Strikeforce, we always had a better deal in Japan and Europe, but as K-1 was having a lot of difficulties and Scott giving us all the terms we wanted, we started taking steps to do more and more business with Strikeforce."

Ultimately, Golden Glory is disappointed in the mass releases on Zuffa's part, but Boon wants to make it clear the the payment issue wasn't at the heart of it. As well, Boon dropped an interesting finishing note about Alistair Overeem to close out the statement.

"Anyway we regret the response from Zuffa and the releases, but it is their company and they can do what they want," Boon said. "We would like to keep working in the future with the UFC and with this statement I [clearly] say that direct payment to any of our fighter was not a problem and will not be a problem in the future.

"We just want to be able to produce great fighters and create great fights for the fans, we have no intention for Co-promotion deals and are even willing to make an exclusive deal for Alistair Overeem to fight in the UFC, if the terms are right."

Penick's Analysis: If the reports of their attempted strong-arming in negotiations and attempting to use Overeem's status as the Champion as leverage to delay his tournament fight or get higher compensation are correct, then this is a case of those issues screwing the other fighters in the gym. Really, the only surprising release - and the least defensible in this situation - was that of Coenen. Coming off of one loss after having defended the title once anyway did not deserve a release, and it's unfortunate that she was cut as a result of these behind-the-scenes issues. That said, regardless of what caused the rift in the first place, Boon is trying to turn the attention to their deals with Coker that caused problems, and is trying to open the line of communication for future negotiations to bring Overeem to the UFC. This is a very interesting development, and it's not out of the realm of possibility for that to happen. I'm not sure what "terms" would need to be met, but if the UFC wanted Overeem in the organization instead of in Strikeforce, they've already released him from the Strikeforce deal, and would be able to bring him in if they wanted to. It's now just dependent on whether or not they begin talks again.

Natal, Brown open UFC 133 with wins

Paul Bradley can't doing anything about his fireplug build, but 5-foot-9 middleweights have a tough time against certain fighters at 185 pounds. Rafael Natal used a five-inch reach advantage to land a boatload of leg kicks and avoid the wrestler's takedowns on his way to unanimous decision victory, 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 on all three cards, in the opener of UFC 133 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

Bradley usually fights down at 170 pounds, but he took this fight at 185 on just 12 days notice when Costa Philippou was moved up the card. The height difference was too much to overcome against the 6-foot Natal.

Natal's gameplan of staying at a distance and using an array of inside and outside leg kicks stymied Bradley's wrestling. The former wrestling All-American at Iowa had his lead leg (left) bruised inside and outside his thigh by the end of the fight.

Bradley (18-3, 0-1 UFC) was only good on 3-of-11 takedowns and did minimal damage on the ground. Give credit to Natal (13-3-1, 1-1-1 UFC) as he picks up his first UFC win. He did so with a broken left hand, that he suffered some time during the fight.

Brown survives tough boxing game from Phan

Mike Brown needed a win in the worst way and he set the tone early by scoring a key takedown and pounding away at Nam Phan in the first round. Phan fought even the rest of the way, but it wasn't enough to avoid losing a unanimous decision, 29-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Back in 2008, Brown (25-8, 1-2 UFC) looked like an unbeatable force as the featherweight champ with the WEC. The division caught up to him and looked like it was passing the 35-year-old. Brown entered this one a loser of two straight and 3-of-4.

His takedown in the first with 3:58 left in the round, turned into a beatdown the rest of the way. Phan got flattened out and Brown pinned his right arm on the mat. Over the next 3:38, Brown got off 50-plus punches and landed most of them with a thud on Phan's face. In the final minute of the round, Brown unloaded with some back elbows as well. It very easily could've been a 10-8 on all three scorecards. Only one judge gave the 10-8 to Brown.

The second and third rounds were much more even. Phan (16-9, 0-2 UFC) did a phenomenal job avoiding the takedown. Brown was just 1-of-8 as he tried to get the fight to the mat. Phan landed some excellent combos in the second, but couldn't pushed the pace as much in the final round.

Kimbo Slice returns to action tonight as a boxer

The last time we saw legendary street fighter Kimbo Slice he was wincing in pain after taking a bevy of leg kicks from Matt Mitrione. The UFC decided to cut bait and release Kimbo after UFC 113. It's been 15 months since the 37-year-old has seen any sanctioned fight action. Tonight, he climbs back in there, but it's in a ring not a cage.

The fighter who cut his teeth on the streets is ready to strap on the big gloves.

"I'm ready to go baby, my blood is boiling," Slice told the Miami Herald. "I was born to fight and [mess] people up."

Kimbo faces James Wade (0-1) at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla. He makes his pro boxing debut in a four-rounder. Kimbo is the main event on seven-fight card. Surprisingly, Showtime Super Six participant Allen Green is also on the docket on the undercard.

Slice has high hopes for his boxing career. A 235-pounder, Kimbo says the heavyweight division needs an action fighter.

"The problem with heavyweights now is they don't have that fighting mentality," Slice said. "I am a nonstop fighter. My thing is nonstop aggression. When you fight me, two things are going to happen ? I'm going to knock you out or you're going to knock me out."

Former UFC fighter Charles McCarthy mans the mic for this solid sitdown with Kimbo. Part two is here.

Expecting a slugfest, UFC on Versus 5's Dan Hardy says he has more weapons

MILWAUKEE - You don't have to tell Dan Hardy what's at risk in Sunday's UFC on Versus 5 main event.

Despite his headliner status, the British slugger is stuck in a three-fight losing skid, and one more loss likely will result in the former title-challenger's UFC release.

But thanks to a change to his training camp and a move overseas, Hardy is confident Sunday will be "a great day."
